Thank you for being a part of the Miles for Meso community and the 8th Annual Alton Miles for Meso 5K Run & 3K Fun Run/Walk. This year’s race had a record turnout, and we are thankful to everyone who took part in the day’s festivities.

Here is some additional information regarding post-race results, and how you can continue to be involved.

Funds Raised

This year the race raised exactly $40,000 for the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), a non-profit dedicated to securing a global ban of asbestos and providing support to victims of asbestos-related diseases.

The top three team fundraisers for this year’s race are:

  • Domani Tripam, ADAO #ENDMESO Team, $4,177.07
  • Emily Simmer, Charlotte’s Champions Team, $2,385.00
  • David Miceli, Miles for Meso – Carrollton Rolling Thunder, $775.00

Results

Congratulations to the winners of this year’s race. Dave Janet won first place overall in the men’s category. He completed the 5K in 16:15. First place overall in the women’s division went to Jackie Pirtle-Hall with a time of 17:18.

Make Your Voice Heard

At this year’s race, participants were able to fill out a postcard, which will be delivered to the U.S. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. These postcards were pre-written and urged the EPA to finish the 1989 ban on asbestos to protect public health, the environment and future generations.

You, too, can do your part to advocate for a total ban on asbestos. Sign a letter to your Congress member urging them to stand up for a ban on asbestos.

Share Your Story

As a show of solidarity and community, ADAO highlights the stories of those who have been affected by asbestos through their “Share Your Story” feature on their website. If you are a mesothelioma warrior, consider sharing your story with others battling asbestos-related illnesses.

International Asbestos Awareness & Prevention Conference

You are invited to attend the 13th Annual International Asbestos Awareness and Prevention Conference this spring in Washington, D.C. This annual event brings together medical experts, patients and their families, and advocates to forward ADAO’s mission. The conference will take place April 7-9, 2017, at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel.
