Upcoming Mesothelioma Events You Don’t Want to Miss

Mesothelioma Awareness Day, which takes place on September 26, was started in 2004 to bring attention to mesothelioma, the rare cancer linked with asbestos exposure. Accordingly, organizations that are dedicated to researching, treating, and curing mesothelioma are organizing a host of events to honor this important day.

Miles for meso logoIn addition, there are some more in-depth conferences and varied events that will take place throughout the next year with the goal to increase mesothelioma awareness and fund mesothelioma treatment research.

  1. 5th Annual Kayaking 4 Meso event – Sept. 12, 2015
    This eight mile kayak trip down the Hudson River begins in Stillwater and ends in Halfmoon, N.Y. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and there is a celebration at Halfmoon Lighthouse Park from 1:00-4:00 afterwards. This event is dedicated to increasing awareness and donating to find better a mesothelioma treatment and cure.
  2. 6th Annual RODs Benefit, Color Out Meso 5k – Sept. 19, 2015
    This benefit was inspired by founder Missy Bowles’ father, who died from mesothelioma in 2008. It will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2015 in Eleanor, West Virginia. Contact the event organizer, Missy Bowles, at 304-395-0636 for more information.
  3. Bruce A. Waite 5k Miles for Meso in Ontario, OH – Sept. 20, 2015
    Bruce A. Waite, a teacher at Mansfield Senior from 1959 – 1989, and avid runner for over 30 years, was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2002 and died in 2003. The race will take place at Ontario High School and will begin at 2:00 p.m. Registration starts at 1:00 p.m. All proceeds will go to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.
  4. Mesothelioma Regional Conference in New York City – Sept. 26, 2015
    The 2015 New York Regional Conference on Malignant Mesothelioma is a one-day event featuring speakers covering a variety of topics related to mesothelioma. The conference is great for patients and family members, medical professionals, and researchers. The cost to attend is $25 per person and includes breakfast and lunch. The event begins at 9:30 a.m.
  5. The Mesothelioma Miracle 5k – Sept. 26, 2015
    This 5K will be held on Saturday, September 26 (Mesothelioma Awareness Day) in Asheville, North Carolina from 6am to 12pm. Contact Ginger Horton at 828.713.0513 for further information.
  6. Miles for Meso Remembrance 5K in memory of Robert G. Aikman – Sept. 26, 2015
    Organized in memory of Robert G. Aikman, this year’s race is meant to honor and remember those who have been affected by mesothelioma. All proceeds from this event will go to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. The race will begin at 7:30 a.m. Contact the event organizer, Nicole Turner, for more information at 210-324-4449.
  7. 7th Annual Alton Miles for Meso 5k – Sept. 26, 2015
    The Miles for Meso 5k run also includes a 2k walk/fun run for participants of varying athletic ability. This race is one of Miles for Meso’s many events to raise support for mesothelioma victims. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization. Runners will receive a Miles for Meso T-shirt and the top 5 male and female runners can win cash prizes up to $500. The race has raised $125,000 for mesothelioma research and support organizations since it began in 2009.
  8. 40th Marine Corps Marathon – Oct. 25, 2015
    To raise funds and awareness for mesothelioma, Karen Kalber will be running the 40th Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC on Sunday, October 25. Contact Karen for more information at [email protected].
  9. 2nd Annual Bishopville Record Hop Revisited: Music for Meso – Nov. 14, 2015
    The Bishopville Record Hop features an ‘oldies music’ themed event to raise money for mesothelioma treatment. Aside from the musical main event, there will be a silent auction for which they are accepting donations of prizes and food. This event will be held at 6pm on Saturday, November 14 at the Bishopville Firehouse in Bishopville, Maryland. Contact Sheila Brittingham at [email protected] for more information.
  10. 12th Annual George R. Brazee Christmas Breakfast and Bazaar for Mesothelioma – Nov. 28, 2015
    This event will be held on Saturday, November 28 from 9am to 1pm at Tewksbury United Methodist Church in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. Contact Joyce Mancini at [email protected] for more information.
