Chemical Spill Exposure in East St. Louis, Ill.
According to authorities at least eight people were sickened by exposure to a dangerous chemical spill at the Ro-Corp. storage and mixing plant on August 31 in East St. Louis, Illinois. This toxic chemical spill led to two St. Louis area hospitals in Missouri being quarantined.
The chemical was released when a barrel was dropped at the Ro-Corp. plant. The barrel's lid popped off and a white powder came out, according the Mehlvill, Mo. fire chief. Haz-mat crews were sent to both hospitals to help with cleanup.
Chemical Believed to Be Nitroaniline
The chemical is believed to be nitroaniline, a highly toxic material. Nitroaniline is commonly used in the synthesis of dyes, antioxidants, pharmaceuticals, gasoline, poultry medicines, and as a corrosion inhibitor. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Web site says it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, respiratory arrest and other symptoms and ailments.
