Be Safe - Halloween Safety Tips
Can you believe Halloween is just a few short days away? Be Safe asked a group of kids what they would do to stay safe this Halloween. Watch this short, fun safety video. It's a great way to start a conversation with your kids about staying smart and safe this Hallowen.
Whether you're the parent of a little goblin or princess, or just a friend or neighbor, here are a few reminders for keeping Halloween fun and safe this year for everyone.
- Adults can Trick or Treat, too! A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds.
- Groups = Good. Encourage children to stay in a group, walk slowly and communicate to each other where they are going.
- Use your GPS? Well, maybe not. But at least designate a route before kids begin trick-or-treating, and make sure they stick to it.
- Follow the crowd. Remain on well-lit streets and have kids trick-or-treat in areas where there are a lot of people around.
- Keep the fun outside. Make sure your kids don’t go inside someone’s house. And remind them to only visit houses with lights on.
- Put a big neon sign on your kid's head. Or, if it doesn't go with the fangs, dress kids in bright costume so others can see them. Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility. Drivers often have trouble seeing Trick-or-Treaters.
- Masks are fun, but . . . Instead of masks, consider having kids wear make-up so they can see better at night.
- Quality-control starts with you! Treats should be thoroughly checked by an adult. Never consume unwrapped food items or open beverages that may be offered.
- Just say "no." Halloween is a great time to remind kids to never accept a ride or go anywhere with a stranger.
- Have fun! After all, what's the point if we don't stuff ourselves with candy and have a great time?
