Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma Videos > Mesothelioma Topics

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer caused by asbestos that occurs in the lining around organs in the abdomen. It is sometimes referred to as abdominal mesothelioma, and accounts for 20% of the mesothelioma cases diagnosed each year. Common symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma can include weight loss, ascites (or a buildup of fluid in the abdomen) and bowel obstruction.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is less common than pleural mesothelioma, but significantly more common than the relatively rare pericardial and testicular mesotheliomas, which affect the heart and reproductive organ linings, respectively. Peritoneal mesothelioma may require removal of the lining of the abdomen—the peritoneum—and some of the surrounding tissue. A current research topic in chemotherapy treatment is its direct administration to the abdomen for cases of peritoneal mesothelioma. This type of chemotherapy is called “intracavitary chemotherapy.”
