Pleural Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma Videos > Mesothelioma Topics

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma, representing about 75% of the cases. The cancer forms in the pleura, the protective lining around the lungs, and thus is sometimes referred to as pleura cancer. Like all forms of mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma is linked directly to asbestos exposure. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, hoarseness, coughing, weight loss, chest pain, and pleural effusion (fluid surrounding the lung).

Pleural mesothelioma is often confused with lung cancer due to similar symptoms and the prevalence of smoking or exposure to carcinogens in workforces that also may have had occupational exposure to asbestos.  Asbestosis is another asbestos-derived disease that is distinct from mesothelioma.

If surgery is appropriate for a particular case of pleural mesothelioma, doctors may recommend a pneumonectomy, or the removal of a lung.  Part of the diaphragm may also require surgical removal in certain cases.
