On this page:

  • What is sarcomatoid mesothelioma?

Sarcomatoid mesothelioma is one of the three main subtypes of malignant mesothelioma that are grouped according to how the cells look under a microscope. Mesothelioma is normally classified according to where it occurs in the body. However, it can also be classified based on how the cells look under a microscope.  When mesothelioma is grouped this way, there are three types:

  • Epitheloid
  • Sarcomatoid or fibrous
  • Biphasic - a mix of epitheloid and sarcomatoid

Approximately seven to twenty percent of mesothelioma cases diagnosed are sarcomatoid mesothelioma. These types of mesothelioma cells can further divide into other types of cancerous cells called:

  • Clear cell
  • Small cell
  • Acinar cell
  • Tubopapillary cell

Sarcomatoid mesothelioma shows up as a spindle-shaped pattern of cells and is extremely aggressive. These cells overlap each other. Sarcomatoid meosthelioma generally affects support tissues like muscle, fat, bone and cartilage.

Other types of mesothelioma:

>>  Pleural mesothelioma

>>  Peritoneal mesothelioma

>>  Pericardial mesothelioma
