Medical or Legal Question About Mesothelioma? We Can Help

The majority of individuals who have been exposed to asbestos find it at their workplaces, often due to a lack of safety precautions by the employer. The CDC has documented proportionate mortality ratios for malignant mesothelioma by occupation (1999).1 In other words, this ratio shows how great the likelihood a worker in the following occupations has of developing mesothelioma compared to the average occupation.

Occupation Proportionate Mortality Ratio (PMR)
Plumbers, pipefitters, steamfitters 4.8
Mechanical engineers 3.0
Electricians 2.4
Teachers, elementary school 2.1

CDC statistics show Wisconsin's age-adjusted death rate for malignant mesothelioma to be between 11.5 and 23 deaths per million per year, in the highest tier for the 1999-2005 period.2 The Wisconsin Department of Health Services shows a corresponding mesothelioma death rate average of 1.1 per 100,000 for 2000-2007.3

Asbestos Exposure in Wisconsin

A 2008 United States Geological Survey report (PDF) lists two asbestos sites in Wisconsin, one past prospect and one natural occurrence. Both of these sites are located in the northeastern quadrant of the state along the border with Michigan, near Menomonee Road Park. The former prospect, Herriman prospect, is the site of cross-fiber chrysotile veins, while the natural occurrence along the Sturgeon Falls sill is that of cross-fiber chrysotile asbestos.4 A form of asbestos rock-forming minerals, fibrous amphiboles, also occur in the western part of the Wisconsin's Gogebic iron range. In addition to these sites, Wisconsin also has many industries that have been linked to asbestos. Some of these potentially hazardous workplaces include power plants, oil facilities, and paper and pulp mills.

Superfund Site
The U.S. EPA has cited one Wisconsin location for asbestos contamination in its Superfund program for hazardous waste cleanup: the Spickler Landfill in Marathon County. The site is a former municipal and industrial dump site in a rural area of Spencer. BASF Wyandotte constructed a 10,000-square-foot sludge disposal area for mercury brine muds. The EPA reports, "Other industrial wastes known to have been disposed of in the Spickler Landfill include kalo dust that contained asbestos, disposed of by Weyerhauser Company …".5 Contaminated areas included groundwater, leachate, sludge, and soil. Cleanup and asbestos removal began in 1992 and has continued through 2009.
