George’s Story

George Dreith grew up in Alton, IL, where his family members were exposed to asbestos at their workplaces. Unbeknownst to them, microscopic asbestos fibers clung to the clothing they wore home, putting George at risk during his early years.

Forrest’s Story

Forrest Wulf, a Wood River native, worked in construction for three decades. In his mid-50s, Forrest began to experience breathing troubles and ultimately received a devastating diagnosis: pleural mesothelioma, the result of years of asbestos exposure in his career.

Jessica’s Story

In 2015, 32-year-old Jessica’s intense stomach pain was waved off by doctors as a panic attack. She sought another opinion, and eventually, it was revealed that Jessica had peritoneal mesothelioma.

With limited knowledge about her condition, Jessica sought out mesothelioma specialists who could provide her with more information. She found hope in Dr. Hedy Lee Kindler at the University of Chicago, who proposed she undergo hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).

Following the 12-hour HIPEC surgery, Jessica beat the odds and reached “No Evidence of Disease” status. A year later, she achieved her dream of becoming a mother and gave birth to her first son. In 2019, Jessica welcomed her second son. Jessica continues to defy her initial prognosis.

Giving Back to the Local Illinois Community

Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University
