What Is Reglan?
Reglan is the trade name for a prescription drug with the generic name of metoclopramide. It is used to treat gastrointestinal malfunctions such as heartburn and gastroparesis and for relief of nausea and vomiting. When regular medicines can not correct these conditions, doctors prescribe Reglan. In February 2009, the FDA mandated that Reglan labels display “black-box” warnings about the risks associated with its consumption. See the FDA's full text of its Reglan warning and the reasoning behind the label change.
The warning essentially states three messages:
- There is a casual link between chronic treatment with metoclopramide and tardive dyskinesia, "a serious movement disorder that is often irreversible."
- Treatment should cease with any sign of tardive dyskinesia.
- Treatment should not be longer than 12 weeks except in rare cases where the benefit outweighs the risks.
