Toyota Recall: Unintended Acceleration Lawsuit Information

Information for Individuals and Families Injured Due to Sudden Unintended Acceleration Car Accidents Involving Toyota and Lexus Vehicles

The Simmons law firm is currently investigating claims of sudden unintended acceleration that led to serious car accident injuries and deaths involving Toyota and Lexus vehicles, including those Toyota vehicles affected by the massive ongoing recalls which include certain of the popular Toyota Camry, Corolla, and Avalon models. Toyota has said that it will recall millions of Toyota-brand cars and trucks in the U.S., dating back to some 2005 models, for potentially faulty gas pedal assemblies.

Independent investigations and reports have linked the Toyota sudden unintended acceleration problem to over 800 accidents, involving over 300 injuries and 19 deaths.  Since 1999 there have been over 1700 incidents of sudden unintended acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”).  These reported events have occurred in substantial numbers of more than 25 different model and model year Toyota vehicles employing an electronic throttle control system.

Toyota finally has acknowledged serious problems with certain of their vehicles.  After initially blaming the issue on faulty floor mats, Toyota now has said that the accelerator pedal could wear down and become difficult to depress, slow to spring back or stuck partly depressed. This can cause sudden unintended acceleration. Sudden unintended acceleration – in which your car races ahead even though you are not pressing the accelerator pedal – is a rare but potentially fatal event.

Recent traffic accidents prompted the Toyota recalls, including last year’s crash of a Lexus sedan that sped out of control and crashed into a ravine near San Diego, killing four people.  On January 26, 2009, Toyota announced that it would suspend sales of certain Toyota models.  Congressional committees have announced that they will conduct hearings to investigate consumer complaints relating to sudden unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles.
