PFAS Law Firms

For over 20 years, Simmons Hanly Conroy has used our resources and reach to help thousands of injured clients nationwide stand up and speak out against the companies that wronged them.

Now, we are proud to put our decades of experience to work on behalf of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) as we fight for fire fighters who have suffered injuries related to PFAS exposure on the job.

Our firm is one of only three leading toxic tort law firms selected by the IAFF to provide PFAS legal services for the nation’s largest union of first responders. Together, the PFAS Law Firms will file lawsuits for individual fire fighters injured by PFAS while working toward industry-wide safety improvements.

The Official Legal Team of the IAFF

Simmons Hanly Conroy and the following independent toxic tort law firms have been chosen by the IAFF to help fire fighters affected by PFAS exposure nationwide:

  • Motley Rice LLC
  • Sullivan Papain Block McManus Coffinas & Cannavo P.C.

Known as the PFAS Law Firms, this powerful legal team of independent firms will fight to bring justice to those battling cancer as well as those who may have already passed away from PFAS-related injuries.

All three firms share a long history of representing fire fighters and union workers across a wide range of legal cases, including complex litigation, asbestos exposure, environmental contamination, occupational health and more.

Collectively, the mission of the PFAS Law Firms is to hold the companies that produced, used or sold hazardous PFAS products accountable for the harm they caused thousands of hardworking Americans. As part of our fight, we intend to push these manufacturers to create safer gear for fire fighters as well.

If you are a fire fighter struggling with a cancer diagnosis, the PFAS Law Firms are here to help. Learn more about your legal options today during a free consultation.

What Are PFAS Chemicals?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) refer to a group of over 12,000 synthetic “forever chemicals” that don’t break down easily because of their strong bonds. Instead, they can remain in the body or environment, causing serious health issues to develop over time.

PFAS Exposure Health Risks

Exposure to toxic PFAS chemicals can:

  • Cause multiple types of cancer
  • Impact behavioral development
  • Negatively affect various systems of the body

The longer the exposure, the greater the risk of adverse health effects.

As a result, fire fighters and other occupations that are more regularly exposed to PFAS often face higher rates of PFAS-related injuries like cancer.

Fire Fighters & PFAS Exposure

Known as bunker or turnout gear, the protective equipment fire fighters wear to stay safe against fire, heat and other hazardous materials on the job contains PFAS. The toxic chemicals can increase the gear’s ability to repel oil and water — but it can also put fire fighters at unnecessary risk of illness.

In 2022, nearly 75% of those added to the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial Wall died of occupational cancer, making it the leading cause of death for fire fighters.

“For far too long, the protective gear worn by fire fighters contained…a deadly secret: PFAS. The companies that made these products knew but never shared the data that the very product they touted as keeping fire fighters safe, was not,” explained Partner Jayne Conroy.

Sadly, PFAS-free alternatives are still not made in North America at this time, something the PFAS Law Firms will work to help change.
