At the age of 81, Burlene was diagnosed with mesothelioma after working in an office setting for most of her life. Her husband, however, had worked with various asbestos products and unknowingly carried the toxic dust home on his uniforms, exposing his wife. In the U.S. Navy, Walter worked as a boiler tender aboard seven ships during his service, where he regularly encountered products containing asbestos. As a result of this exposure, Walter was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma decades later.
