Mesothelioma Compensation for Family Members background image

Mesothelioma Compensation for Family Members

A mesothelioma diagnosis can come with a lot of unexpected expenses, including treatment costs, travel bills to see specialists, and more.

At Simmons Hanly Conroy, we can help families pursue meaningful compensation by filing mesothelioma legal claims on their behalf.

Find out more about mesothelioma compensation for family members:

  • Asbestos Trust Funds: An estimated $30 billion is still available for patients as well as families through asbestos trust funds.
  • Mesothelioma Lawsuits: Families may be able to file lawsuits against the companies that made and sold asbestos-containing products that caused a loved one’s mesothelioma diagnosis.
  • Asbestos Claims After Death: You may be eligible to continue a legal claim that a family member started if they pass away, or file a wrongful death lawsuit if no legal action has yet been taken.
  • Mesothelioma Settlements & Verdicts: Simmons Hanly Conroy has recovered over $10.3 billion in lawsuit verdicts and settlements for families affected by mesothelioma.
  • VA Benefits: If you developed mesothelioma following U.S. military asbestos exposure, you may qualify for disability compensation worth $3,930 a month and free health care.

“Our firm is unique in that we can help families file both trust fund claims and lawsuits simultaneously. This way, we’re able to maximize the compensation our clients may receive.”
Lisa Nathanson Busch, Firm Partner

Since mesothelioma is very aggressive, many families choose to work quickly with our asbestos attorneys to pursue the compensation they may deserve. This helps them to not only afford immediate medical expenses, but to protect loved ones moving forward.

Mesothelioma Family Stories

At Simmons Hanly Conroy, we’ve helped over 8,000 families secure the justice they deserve after a mesothelioma diagnosis.

Below, hear stories from family members of mesothelioma patients about how this cancer impacted their lives, and how we were able to assist them.

Connie Bonnin, wife of a mesothelioma victim

Connie: Caring for Her Husband

Connie Bonnin’s husband Alan Bonnin was still working when he started developing fluid buildup around his lungs. After his lung collapsed, he underwent emergency surgery and was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma.

Alan could no longer work to support their family, and his health deteriorated rapidly. After a stay at a rehabilitation center where Alan wasn’t properly treated, Connie and her sons resolved to care for Alan themselves.

“Suddenly, my sons and I all became different levels of caregivers,” Connie recalls. “Mesothelioma changed our lives drastically.”

The loss of Alan’s income posed another significant challenge, and at one point, Connie worried about where their next meal would come from.

Friends of the family encouraged them to reach out to Simmons Hanly Conroy. Our attorneys were able to secure settlements that helped pay for Alan’s treatment and provided Connie and their children with financial security.

A mesothelioma patient with his family

The Crosbys: Helping Their Father & Husband

For decades, Winifred “Fred” Crosby worked with asbestos-containing parts used in cars and military plane engines. Decades later, his wife Anita noticed that Fred was having trouble catching his breath.

“It got to the point where he couldn’t even walk from the house to our pond,” Anita remembered. Fred assumed his breathing difficulties were from allergies, but his family urged him to see a doctor. After months of symptoms, he was diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Given just 6 months to live, Fred leaned on the support of his family, with his son and daughter helping him navigate this new normal. Together, they bravely decided to file a mesothelioma claim to protect the things Fred loved most: his wife and farm.

“We wanted to make sure Dad’s suffering wasn’t for nothing and that Mom would be taken care of,” said his daughter Terri. “We talked to quite a few law firms and were most comfortable with Simmons Hanly Conroy. They just seemed more down-to-earth.”

The firm recovered compensation before Fred passed, giving both him and his family peace of mind. “It was a blessing that we got some money from this process,” Anita said. “I think it made Fred really happy too.”

A Law Firm Dedicated to Finding a Cure

At Simmons Hanly Conroy, we don’t just help families affected by mesothelioma — we also support research to end this cancer as we know it.

Family Members & Asbestos Exposure FAQs

How can I support a loved one with mesothelioma?

There are plenty of ways you can support someone you love who is facing a mesothelioma diagnosis.

You can assist a mesothelioma patient by:

  • Driving them to treatments and appointments
  • Helping keep medical records and bills organized
  • Offering to take care of chores or errands
  • Providing in-home care if needed
  • Reviewing their legal options with them
  • Spending quality time together

At Simmons Hanly Conroy, we work with families every day who are facing mesothelioma, helping them to pursue financial compensation, get medical care by working with our nurses, and receive the support they deserve.

Can there be a family history of mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma does not run in families. While many mistakenly think mutations to a gene called BAP1 cause this cancer, only asbestos exposure causes mesothelioma. BAP1 gene mutations may increase your risk of this cancer — but only if you were exposed to asbestos.

Members of the same family may develop mesothelioma due to secondary exposure. Secondary asbestos exposure to families occurs when someone who worked with or around this toxic material comes home with fibers stuck to their clothing, skin, or hair.

At Simmons Hanly Conroy, our mesothelioma law firm can determine how you could’ve been exposed to asbestos— even if you don’t remember.

What is the life expectancy of someone with mesothelioma?

The average life expectancy for a mesothelioma patient is 12-21 months, according to F1000 Research. Mesothelioma is generally aggressive and hard to treat, but it’s important to know that your loved one could live longer than expected.

Firm client Julie Gundlach will celebrate 20 years of survivorship in 2026. Originally given a terminal diagnosis, Julie endured numerous treatments so she could live to see her young daughter grow up.

Julie has not needed treatment in over a decade and now works to help raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos. “I take the frustration and the anger, and I turn it into advocacy and action, because that is all I know how to do,” Julie said.

What if my father died of asbestos exposure and mesothelioma?

If your father passed away as a result of asbestos exposure and mesothelioma, you may be qualified to seek compensation by filing legal claims on his behalf.

When Clarence “Smoky” Ambrose was diagnosed with terminal mesothelioma, his last wish was that he could protect his family. His son Jeff fulfilled this by filing a wrongful death lawsuit with the help of our mesothelioma attorneys.

“My dad died unlawfully. I love my dad, and we appreciate what Simmons Hanly Conroy has done for us,” Jeff expressed. “I appreciate that they’re trying to help the people that have been diagnosed to gain more life with their loved ones.”

Is there mesothelioma compensation for family members?

Yes. Types of asbestos compensation for family members affected by a mesothelioma diagnosis include asbestos trust funds set up by bankrupt companies, mesothelioma lawsuits, and wrongful death lawsuits on behalf of someone who’s already passed away.

As a national mesothelioma law firm, Simmons Hanly Conroy can help families in all 50 states pursue different types of compensation claims.

Fill out our contact form now to find out if your family may be eligible for mesothelioma compensation.

At Simmons Hanly Conroy, we can help families in all 50 states, giving you the convenience of a local firm with the track record of a national one. We can meet at a time and place that’s convenient for you anywhere in the country, and work to quickly build a lawsuit for you.
