What Caused the Camp Lejeune Water Contamination?
From 1953 to 1987, two water treatment plants at MCB Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina were contaminated with potentially cancer-causing chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and industrial solvents.
Camp Lejeune water contamination chemicals include:
- Benzene
- Perchloroethylene (PCE), also known as tetrachloroethylene
- Trichloroethylene (TCE)
- Vinyl chloride (VC)
Benzene, TCE and VC are all classified as carcinogenic (cancer-causing), while PCE is considered to probably be carcinogenic. Exposure can cause a range of additional health effects as well.
These dangerous chemicals seeped into the groundwater from on-base activities as well as a dry cleaning business located near the base. The poisoned water supply was then distributed across the military base and barracks.
During the affected decades, nearly 1 million civilian workers, military service members, and their family members were potentially exposed to these toxic chemicals.
