Josh Kurtzman is an attorney at Simmons Hanly Conroy and a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve. He works in the firm’s Complex Litigation Department and is driven by the opportunity to help people who have been wronged.

“I value advocating for individuals harmed by powerful corporations and ensuring they receive the justice they deserve,” explained Josh.

A Comprehensive Approach to Complex Cases

With over a decade of legal experience, Josh brings a well-rounded and strategic perspective to every case. He has served as a judicial law clerk, defense attorney, and federal prosecutor, which has given him unique insight into the legal system.

“Professionally, I most enjoy digging into the facts and legal issues — identifying the evidence needed to prove our claims and prevail at trial,” said Josh. “This often requires extensive legal research and applying the governing law to the specific facts of each case.”

Before joining Simmons Hanly Conroy, Josh spent six years at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Nashville, where he prosecuted complex federal cases involving violent crime, organized drug trafficking, national security matters, and cyber investigations. He first-chaired numerous trials and led major investigations that extended across the nation and internationally.

Josh also prioritizes being present and accessible for his clients throughout the legal process. He understands that filing a lawsuit can feel overwhelming and unfamiliar, and he strives to provide steady guidance and dependable support every step of the way.

“I understand that dealing with the legal system is unfamiliar for most people, so I aim to be a resource to my clients and someone they can rely on,” said Josh. “I’m always available to answer questions or discuss their case.”

Background & Experience

Josh earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he played Division I lacrosse.

Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army for ten years, leading task forces during deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan and overseeing the training of cadets and new soldiers.

During his service, Josh graduated from U.S. Army Ranger School and U.S. Army Airborne School. He received numerous awards, including a Bronze Star Medal for Valor and 3 Bronze Stars for Service.

“After I left the military, I wanted to find a way to continue to serve,” explained Josh. “Becoming a lawyer allowed me to continue to serve clients who were seeking justice.”

Josh went on to attend the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor in 2014. He currently serves as a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve and has presented numerous trainings to local and federal law enforcement on topics including national security, conducting complex investigations, and the use of expert witnesses.
