George grew up in a working-class family in Alton, Ill. His father was an aircraft mechanic and his mother worked at a dry cleaners. His uncle was in the steel industry and his grandfather worked in manufacturing. At a young age, George learned the value of hard work, which he put to use in college and in his career.

Like many workers in the 1950s and 1960s, George’s parents and relatives were exposed to asbestos at their jobs and unknowingly carried it home on their clothing. This in turn exposed George and other family members who came into contact with them. As a young man, George also worked, at times, in industry and was further exposed to asbestos at his jobsite.

It was not until decades later that George began to suffer the ill effects of his asbestos exposure. Shortness of breath was a precursor to his diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma.

George fought his mesothelioma diagnosis and endured many rounds of chemotherapy, which left him tired and physically sick. Yet, nothing stopped him from living each day to the fullest. While fighting the disease, he cherished becoming a grandfather and walking his daughter down the aisle.

George’s wife, Chris, said, “George relished the everyday moments in life that year.” He made time to play golf with his son. He took opportunities to watch his favorite television shows. He sat on the porch and visited with family and friends.

Several months into his treatment, George and his family took part in the 6^th Annual Miles for Meso, a run/walk in Alton, Illinois, that raises awareness and funds for mesothelioma research and awareness. He and his team of 65-strong formed “Georgie Porgie’s Meso Patrol,” which won top honors for fundraising.
