Asbestos Exposure and Mesothelioma

Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that is often fatal. When asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested, they travel to the lungs and become lodged in the tissue there, where they can then slowly cause inflammation, scarring and other health problems.

It can take 10-50 years after exposure for an asbestos-related disease like mesothelioma to develop. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease, a mesothelioma lawyer in Chicago may be able to help you pursue compensation and justice.

Filing a Mesothelioma Lawsuit in Chicago

Filing a mesothelioma lawsuit can help you cover medical expenses and secure your family’s future well-being for years to come. Our Chicago mesothelioma lawyers can make the process as easy as possible for you, and guide you through the legal system.

Each senior attorney operates within a small legal team composed of several associate attorneys, paralegals, medical staff and investigators. This structure ensures you will receive personalized attention while your case works its way through this complex legal process.

There are a few different ways you may be able to recover compensation, and most of them don’t involve going to court:

  • Asbestos Trust Funds: Around $30 billion have been set aside by asbestos companies to compensate people who have developed asbestos-related diseases.
  • Lawsuit Settlement or Verdict: Most mesothelioma lawsuits are settled out of court, before they ever reach the trial stage. That said, our mesothelioma attorneys are prepared to take every case the distance, presenting it at trial if a fair settlement can’t be reached.
  • Veterans Affairs (VA) Benefits: Veterans with mesothelioma may be able to access medical and financial benefits through the VA. We have VA-accredited mesothelioma lawyers on staff to help veterans prepare VA claims to access the benefits they are owed.

Statute of Limitations

Illinois has a unique set of laws called statutes of limitations that restrict the amount of time mesothelioma patients and their family members have to file a claim.

For this reason, it’s important to contact a mesothelioma lawyer in Illinois as soon as possible after your diagnosis.

If you’d like to talk to a Chicago mesothelioma attorney about a potential case, we are available to meet with you in your home or a location of your choosing.

“I Know a Superhero” Family Fun Festival

Simmons Hanly Conroy is proud to have sponsored the Mesothelioma Heroes Foundation’s “I Know a Superhero” Family Fun Festival, which took place at Mt. Greenwood Park/St. Christina Fields on Chicago’s southwest side.

Simmons Hanly Conroy’s sponsorship of the event helped forward the Mesothelioma Heroes Foundation’s mission to raise awareness about asbestos exposure and mesothelioma. Proceeds from the Family Fun Festival benefited the University of Chicago Medicine’s mesothelioma program and the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO).

The Mesothelioma Heroes Foundation and the festival were inspired by Chicagoan David “SuperDad” Dioguardi, a loving husband and father of nine children. Dioguardi battled mesothelioma from September 2011 until his passing in 2016. The nickname “SuperDad” was born when David’s oldest daughter gave him a Superman cape, which he hung over his hospital bed while undergoing surgery.

“Stories like David Dioguardi’s fight against mesothelioma are an inspiring reminder of the strength of the human spirit,” said Simmons Hanly Conroy Partner Tim Thompson, the mesothelioma attorney who oversaw Dioguardi’s case.
