Registration now open for 12th annual race to benefit asbestos disease awareness

Alton, Illinois – The 12th Annual Alton Miles for Meso 5K Run & 3K Fun Run/Walk will return in 2020 as a virtual event starting Sept. 26 to benefit the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO).

Presented by Simmons Hanly Conroy and coordinated by the Metro Tri Club, the 2020 race will be organized virtually to ensure the safety of participants and recognize the significant risk that COVID-19 presents to everyone.

“For more than a decade, the Alton Miles for Meso race has been an exciting reason for our mesothelioma community to look forward to in September,” said Chairman John Simmons. “Cancer, and especially mesothelioma, is an isolating disease. In this time of social distancing, we want all mesothelioma patients and their families to know that Miles for Meso is still here, supporting their fight against this terrible, preventable disease.”

Race organizers are asking everyone to register online like in past years, but on race day, plan to run or walk their favorite 5K or 3K route individually or with their family groups in their neighborhoods, local parks or community while following state and local social distancing requirements.

“The goal is to keep everyone healthy and safe by building on the community created by past Miles for Meso events and transition that energy and excitement to the existing online community on social media,” explained Firm Chief Operating Officer and Miles for Meso Chair Todd Adamitis,  “As an added bonus, this year’s virtual format will allow those who normally couldn’t have traveled to Alton to get involved.”

Early registration is currently open and costs $30. It includes a long-sleeve T-shirt, race bibs and other race give-a-ways such as the Miles for Meso bracelet and more. Everyone who registers by Sept. 16 will receive their race packets in time for the virtual event, which begins Sept. 26. No local packet pick-up at the firm’s Alton office will be available.

“Because of the virtual format, the Alton Miles for Meso race will have a few temporary adjustments for 2020,” said Alton Race Director Robin Misukonis, who also serves as the President of Metro Tri Club. “However, its still the same great race helping the same great cause.”

Prizes will still be awarded to the Top Fundraising Teams. However, the race results will be self-reported using a virtual results portal on raceroster.com. Cash or age group prizes will not be awarded this year. However, everyone registered for either the 5K or 3K events and who submits their finish time on the #MilesForMeso virtual results page will receive a 2020 #MilesforMeso Finisher Medal. The event will be open online from Sept. 26 to Oct. 2 to upload results.

In addition, race organizers are asking that participants share pictures or videos of their race to Facebook or Twitter. Be sure to use the hashtag #MilesforMeso and tag Miles for Meso and Simmons Hanly Conroy on Facebook. Additional ways to get involved virtually will be shared as the event gets closer.

For the seventh year, proceeds from the event will benefit ADAO – the largest independent asbestos victims’ group in the United States. It was founded in 2004 to give asbestos victims and concerned citizens a united voice, to raise public awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure, and to work toward a global asbestos ban. The 2019 race raised $25,000 for ADAO. Cumulatively, the race has raised $180,000 for the charity.

“The ADAO community is grateful to Simmons Hanly Conroy and all the Miles for Meso sponsors for their continued generous support of our work to secure a U.S. asbestos ban and raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos,” said ADAO President Linda Reinstein.
