Simmons Hanly Conroy Announces Joint Venture with Hanly Conroy Bierstein & Sheridan LLP

Two of the nation’s leading plaintiff law firms, Simmons Hanly Conroy, and Hanly Conroy Bierstein & Sheridan LLP announced today a new joint venture in which they are sharing resources to represent businesses in litigation against other businesses on a contingency basis. The firms will open new office together at 112 Madison Avenue on May 16, 2005.

The joint venture, in which each firm is retaining its individual identity, is one of the few in the nation to handle business litigation on a contingency basis, which has traditionally been the domain of personal injury cases. The new model allows smaller businesses with limited financial resources to pursue litigations against larger organizations by which they have been harmed.

Jeff Cooper, a Shareholder of Simmons Hanly Conroy, said, “We’re extremely proud of the work that we’ve done on behalf of individuals who have had their lives destroyed by reckless practices. We look forward now to working with Hanly Conroy Bierstein & Sheridan, which has a long history of success in litigating complex corporate cases, to fight on behalf of smaller businesses that have been hurt because of wrongdoing by larger organizations.”

Paul J. Hanly, Jr., a Shareholder at Hanly Conroy Bierstein & Sheridan said, “The combination of Simmons Hanly Conroy, one of the youngest, most aggressive firms in the country, and Hanly Conroy Bierstein & Sheridan, with our experience in complex litigations and business related disputes, will open up doors for businesses that otherwise could not have considered litigation an option.”

The Simmons Hanly Conroy, which is based in East Alton in Madison County, Illinois, and also has offices in Chicago, is the leading asbestos litigation firm in the country. In 2003, the firm won a $250 million verdict against U.S. Steel on behalf of its client, Roby Whittington. Whittington developed mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer, from being exposed to asbestos at the U.S. Steel plant where he worked. To date, it is the largest asbestos verdict for an individual in U.S. history.

Based in New York, Hanly Conroy Bierstein & Sheridan handles complex cases that involve multiple jurisdictions, including litigating on behalf of September 11 victims against airline and airport security companies, and, in a separate case, financial sponsors of terrorism.

Both firms also handle litigation involving securities fraud, commercial disputes, insurance coverage, and products liability involving, for example, injuries from manufacturers of harmful drugs and other materials. The new joint venture will handle virtually all areas of civil business litigation.
