Simmons Hanly Conroy Shareholder Paul Hanly to Moderate Opioid Panel at HarrisMartin Conference

NAPA, CALIFORNIA – Simmons Hanly Conroy, one of the nation’s largest mass tort firms, is proud to announce that Named Shareholder Paul J. Hanly, Jr. has been invited to moderate a panel discussing opioids at HarrisMartin’s upcoming MDL conference titled “The Mass Tort Litigation Landscape – A Critical Analysis.” The event will take place in Napa, California Sept. 25-26. Recently, Hanly was named as co-lead counsel in the national opioid MDL litigation pending in Cleveland, Ohio. This is regarded as the largest and most complex litigation in U.S. history.

Hanly’s session at the conference, titled “The Opioid Litigation,” will take place from 1-2 p.m. Sept. 25. While Hanly will serve as moderator, panelists will include Paul J. Pennock, Weitz & Luxenberg; Erin K. Dickinson, Crueger Dickinson LLC; Krista Baisch, Crueger Dickinson LLC; James M. Williams, Chehardy Sherman Williams; and Cynthia L. Garber, Robinson Calcagnie, Inc. The panel will discuss the following topics related to the opioid litigation:

  • Who are the defendants? And who are the plaintiffs?
  • Liability, causation, and damage theories
  • Insurance and bankruptcy issues
  • MDL and state court updates

In January 2018, a federal judge named Hanly and attorneys Joseph F. Rice and Paul T. Farrell Jr. as co-lead counsels for the plaintiffs in the federal litigation alleging pharmaceutical companies and physicians engaged in fraudulent marketing of prescription opioid painkillers, leading to the current nationwide epidemic.

Hanly is a founding member of Simmons Hanly Conroy, headquartered in Alton, Illinois. Based in the firm’s New York City office, he has extensive experience in mass tort litigation including representing more than 5,000 clients who sued Purdue Pharma in 2003, the maker of OxyContin, and winning a significant settlement in 2006.

Simmons Hanly Conroy and its attorneys have held multiple, national positions of note in pharmaceutical mass tort litigations. Federal judges have appointed the firm’s attorneys to serve on multiple plaintiffs executive and steering committees in mass tort litigations including DePuy Pinnacle hip implants, Volkswagen emissions scandal, testosterone replacement therapy, transvaginal mesh, Lipitor, Yaz and more. Their work has resulted in millions of dollars secured on behalf of clients injured by dangerous drugs and defective medical devices.

HarrisMartin’s MDL Conference will be held at the Westin Verasa Napa. See the full agenda or register for the conference here.
