Asbestos Exposure and Mesothelioma in Illinois

During the 20th century, more than 1 million U.S. workers were exposed to asbestos, a dangerous mineral that can cause the cancer mesothelioma, and many face serious health risks to this day.

Quick Facts About Asbestos

  • Asbestos is a natural mineral that is durable and resistant to heat
  • Over 3,000 household and industrial products contained asbestos, including roofing shingles, talcum powder, automobile brakes, insulation, boilers, and more
  • Multiple industries, like manufacturing, steel working, and shipbuilding, used asbestos
  • Inhaling or ingesting asbestos fibers can cause mesothelioma to develop 10-50 years after initial exposure
  • Secondary exposure occurs when asbestos is brought home on a worker’s clothes, skin, or hair, exposing others indirectly

Some job sites, homes, and older buildings in Illinois may still contain asbestos, putting workers and residents at risk of exposure even today.

What If I Don’t Know How I Was Exposed?

Our knowledgeable Illinois mesothelioma attorneys have helped many past clients identify where they were exposed to asbestos and which companies may be responsible.

Over the past two decades, we’ve gathered evidence on thousands of Illinois job sites where asbestos was used. It’s possible we’ve already represented someone who worked at the same spot as you.

Johns Manville Corporation is one of the largest asbestos processors in the world. From the 1920s until 1988, the company operated a manufacturing plant in Waukegan, IL. The Environmental Protection Agency has since designated this area as a Superfund site, due in part to the presence of asbestos.

George’s Story

George Dreith grew up in Alton, IL, where his family members were exposed to asbestos at their workplaces. Unbeknownst to them, microscopic asbestos fibers clung to the clothing they wore home, putting George at risk during his early years.

George was also directly exposed to asbestos during his career, and he was eventually diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma. Following his diagnosis, George dedicated his time to caring for his loved ones and raising awareness about the hazards of asbestos exposure.

While undergoing treatment, George participated in the Alton Miles for Meso fundraiser hosted by Simmons Hanly Conroy. He also worked with our mesothelioma lawyers in Illinois to hold the asbestos companies responsible for his illness accountable.

Jessica’s Story

When 32-year-old Jessica began experiencing intense stomach pain, she went to the hospital. However, doctors waved it off as a panic attack. Determined to figure out the true cause of her symptoms, she sought another opinion and was eventually diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma.

With limited knowledge about her condition, Jessica searched for a mesothelioma specialist who could provide her with more information. She found hope in Dr. Hedy Lee Kindler at the University of Chicago, who proposed that she undergo hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).

Following the 12-hour HIPEC surgery, Jessica beat the odds and became a mesothelioma survivor. A year later, she achieved her dream of becoming a mother and gave birth to her first son.

Forrest’s Story

Forrest Wulf, a Wood River native, worked in construction for three decades. In his mid-50s, he began to experience breathing troubles and ultimately received a devastating diagnosis: pleural mesothelioma, the result of years of occupational asbestos exposure.

Forrest’s illness forced him to retire early. Our Illinois mesothelioma attorneys were able to secure a settlement on his behalf, so he could afford medical treatments and spend his remaining time with family.

“I wouldn’t have a thing if it wasn’t for my ability to hold the companies who harmed me accountable in court,” Forrest said.

Driven by his love for family, Forest fought mesothelioma for over seven years. He sadly lost his battle at the age of 63.

Albert’s Story

Albert Manring was born in Fairfield, Illinois. He served in the U.S. Navy as a flight crewman on R4D aircraft before joining the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 649.

Throughout his career, Albert was exposed to asbestos at different job sites. However, it wasn’t until he retired that he was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma.

The Manrings decided to contact our Illinois lawyers for mesothelioma and file a lawsuit against the companies responsible for Albert’s illness. We were able to handle every step of the legal process on their behalf.

“Hiring Simmons Hanly Conroy was the best decision my dad ever made,” said Albert’s daughter Linda.

Illinois Lawyer for Mesothelioma FAQs

What is an Illinois mesothelioma lawsuit?

An Illinois mesothelioma lawsuit is a type of product liability claim against the companies that made or used the asbestos products a mesothelioma patient was exposed to.

Since many companies knowingly hid the dangers of asbestos from their employees and consumers, victims may be able to hold asbestos companies accountable and pursue compensation for injuries they suffered as a result of the companies’ products.

Even if your loved one has passed away, you may still be able to seek compensation on their behalf by filing a mesothelioma claim after their death.

What is the mesothelioma statute of limitations in Illinois?

Unfortunately, asbestos exposure victims only have a short window of time after their mesothelioma diagnosis to file a claim due to statutes of limitations, which are state-specific deadlines on when you can file a lawsuit.

In Illinois, you only have 2 years after your diagnosis or the death of a loved one to file a mesothelioma claim. Once these deadlines pass, it’s too late to take legal action for your illness.

Contact us as soon as possible. Our team can listen to what’s going on and let you know if you still have time to take legal action — even if you think the deadline may have already passed.

  • Provide ongoing support to you and your family while staying available via phone and text

When was asbestos banned in Illinois?

In July 1972, Illinois banned the use of asbestos for fireproofing or insulating buildings and building materials. Legislators also passed the Asbestos Abatement Act in 1984, which established regulations for the removal of asbestos from schools.

However, asbestos isn’t completely banned in Illinois. Because of this, residents may still be at risk of exposure.
